Inspection Authorization Eligibility Requirements

Eligibility for an IA rating is governed by title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 65.91 - Inspection Authorization.

To be eligible for the Inspection Authorization rating, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires that the applicant:

  • Hold a currently effective mechanic certificate with both an Airframe and Powerplant rating for at minimum of three years;
  • Have been actively engaged in maintaining aircraft for a minimum of three years prior to applying;
  • Have a fixed base of operations where they may be contacted either in person or by telephone during a typical work week (not necessarily the same place where the applicant will exercise Inspection authority);
  • Have available the necessary equipment, facilities, and inspection data needed to properly inspect airframes, powerplants, propellers, and any related part or appliance; and
  • Pass a computer exam on his or her ability to inspect according to the safety standards for returning aircraft to service.

If an applicant should fail the exam, they can reapply after 90 days.
